$13 MILLION FOR SOMALIA
Andrew Adansi-Bonnah was student in Ghana and he was only 11 years old. He wanted to raise $13 million for people in Somalia. He decided to walk from door to door during the summer holiday. He ran a campaign called ‘Save Somali Children from Hunger.’ He wanted to help children who didn’t have enough food.
Many people in East Africa are going hungry. It is because of the drought. It is difficult to grow food because there is no rain. Groups around the world are raising money to help feed the hungry.
“There are hungry people in Ghana but people in Somalia have more difficult lives,” said Andrew. Other East African nations are going hungry, too. Andrew wants to help all of them.
Organizations are trying to collect money to solve the problem. The UN requested $2.4 million from different countries.
Andrew’s project started on August 1, 2011. Andrew raised about $6,500 in only two weeks. His father gave him $500. That is a lot of money for Andrew’s family because his father earns $500 a month.
Andrew’s goal was $13 million. Ghanaians earn about $2,500 a year but in Somalia they only earn $600 a month. Because of that, Andrew says, they are in a position to help.
He wore a bright orange T-shirt. His organization’s name was on his t-shirt. He made a TV appearance and did interviews. He became very famous in Ghana.
Andrew’s father was a schoolteacher. He was surprised by Andrew’s interest in the cause. “I wondered why as child he was concerned about people far away from him,” he said.
“This is a moment that we can touch lives,” Andrew said. “It is not correct to have so much to eat when others have nothing to eat. It is not right.”
