A Caring Career
a- I’ve always loved animals. I grew up in a big city with lots of street animals. From as young as I can remember, my mum and I would go out to feed the cats and dogs and make sure they had water. One day one of them was injured and we took it to the local vet. It seemed so exciting to me—people rushing around and shouting orders. We saved the cat and I decided I wanted to save all the animals I could.
b- Well, I’m at the end of my third year of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme now. It was quite difficult. I studied microbiology at bachelor level and then came here. In the first two years, we focused on science subjects like animal anatomy and physiology. Now we’re using that knowledge to diagnose and recommend possible treatments.
c- This summer, I’m going to start a year-long internship at a small family run clinic. I’m also going to write a research paper based on my experience there. If I complete these successfully, I will get my Doctorate Certificate.
d- Not quite. I have to do some state licensing exams. Then I’m going to do another internship to gain experience. Some of my friends are going to do speciality training, for horses, etc., but I’m not going to do that. I want to be a family vet, so I’m going to see mostly cats and dogs and maybe a rabbit or two.
