A DIFFERENT HOUSE - LIGHTHOUSE

David Kensington has an amazing home. His home is different from our homes because he lives in a lighthouse. The lighthouse is, of course, near the sea and every day you can hear the waves crashing onto the rocks below. “In fact you can hear the sea everyday,” says David. “When people learn that I live in a lighthouse they think that it is very quiet here. Actually it’s not really a quiet place, it’s often windy and there are many noisy birds calling. There are no cars or people near but there’s always a lot of sound.” Inside the lighthouse it’s much quieter. The walls and windows are very thick to protect the building from storms. David says he isn’t afraid of the storms. He knows that he’s safe in the lighthouse, which is over a hundred years old. There is still a working light at the top of the lighthouse to show ships where they are. “Many lighthouses are empty now, and some don’t have a light,” says David. “It’s quite easy to buy one to live in.” David is an artist who loves painting a lot. He says he doesn’t have to drive around the city and try to find a good spot for painting because he can just look out of the window to find what he wants to paint. David says there are many reasons why that lighthouse is the best place for him to live in. First of all, it is much easier for him to concentrate when he is alone. There are no people living around his house and that helps a lot. He also likes the wonderful view his house has. Although many people may think that he is scared of the storms, he is not. He likes the storms. He usually takes a photo of them to paint afterwards. He loves sea life too. From the lighthouse, he can see dolphins, whales and many different kinds of sea birds. He can go fishing whenever he wants and he doesn’t have to travel to find a good fishing spot. He loves cooking and eating seafood and he often eats lobster and crab. All the rooms in the lighthouse are on top of each other. On the ground floor there’s the kitchen. In the kitchen there is a table and chairs for dining. On the next floor there’s the living room. Above the living room is a bedroom and small bathroom, and right at the top is the room where David does his paintings. So, does David have any problems with his unusual home? He says it is difficult for his family and friends to go to his house, so he can’t have guests very often. Also, he needs to walk for half an hour or cycle to the nearest village when he needs something. David’s biggest problem is that he does all his shopping online but most shops don’t want to deliver the things he buys to his house.
