A DIFFERENT PE LESSON

Some kids in Colorado have a climbing wall and a swimming pool in their gym. Now, they have a new activity; skateboarding.

These kids go to Douglass Elementary. Their gym teacher is Richard Cendali and he teaches the kids how to skateboard. Cendali says that skateboarding is very good for kids. It helps to balance and get strong. Students also feel good. They say that skateboarding is fun.

Students first get safety lessons. They all wear helmets, kneepads and elbow pads. Then they learn how to stand on the skateboard. Finally they learn to do tricks. The skateboards have soft wheels. They are good for the gym floor.

In PE lessons students usually learn team sports. They learn sports like soccer, basketball and volleyball. Some students don’t like team sports. Also they can’t do these sports when they are alone. Only 10% of children play team sports after school. They need other children to play basketball, volleyball or football. Schools think it is important to teach students to keep fit. There are many other ways to keep fit. Skateboarding is one of them.
