About La Tomatina

La Tomatina is one of the messiest festivals all over the world. People come together and throw tomatoes at each other. It is the world’s biggest food fight!

It is celebrated on the last Wednesday in August in the small town of Bunol in eastern Spain. The festival began way back in 1944. There is no reason about why it began. Some people guess it began as a food fight between children. Others think the local people threw tomatoes to show they didn’t like a politician from the town.

The tomato throwing goes on from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Trucks come into the town with 125,000 kilos of tomatoes. When the canon sounds, the fun begins.
