American Holidays

American Holidays

Hi, my name’s Mia, and I’m from the UK. I was born on 29 February 2004. You may be surprised to see the number 29 there, but it’s true. 2004 was a leap year, so February had 29 days. I celebrate my birthday on 1 March when it’s not a leap year.

I’m going to the US in 2020, so I’ll celebrate my birthday there on the 29th because 2020 is a leap year too. America has different public holidays from the UK. For example, on the 4th of July, they celebrate their independence from the UK. Another interesting holiday is Thanksgiving Day. People have family dinners on this day. It’s on the fourth Thursday of November, so every year it changes a little bit. In 2020, it’ll be on 26 November.

There are also public holidays that have a different date every year. Both the UK and the US celebrate Easter. It’s an important holiday for Christians. They go to church and pray. In 2020, Easter will be on 12 April. My mum is going to come to America too, so I must buy her a gift on Mother’s Day. It’s on the second Sunday of May, which is the 10th of May in 2020!
