An Accident on the Lake
Last weekend my friend Beth went for a walk by the lake. It had been really cold all week and the lake had frozen over. We all know how dangerous it is to go on frozen water, but some local children had decided to play on the lake anyway.
As Beth was walking around the lake, she kept an eye on the children because she was a bit worried about them. They had a sled and were using it on the lake. She was just walking past the part of the lake where they were, when she heard one of them scream. She turned to them and saw that the ice had cracked and one of the children had fallen into the freezing cold water.
Beth panicked and didn’t know what to do. If she went out onto the ice, it was likely to crack more. She looked around for something to throw to the child in the lake. She managed to find a long branch and leaned out over the water with it. The child grabbed hold of the end of the branch and Beth pulled. Finally, she managed to pull the boy out.
The boy was absolutely freezing and was in shock. Luckily, one of the fathers of the boys had just arrived at the lake in his car. He was looking for the kids and was worried they might be down at the lake. He grabbed the kids and put them all in the car. Beth got in too and they drove to the local hospital. The boy was looked after by the nurses and doctors. They were all so worried for him, but he managed to make a full recovery.
Beth was absolutely terrified by what had happened. She made all the children promise not to go out on frozen rivers or lakes ever again. She even went to the local schools and talked to the teachers and children about what had happened.
