AN ALTERNATIVE HOLIDAY
These days, tourists prefer adventure holidays to visiting famous historic sites. Holidays at four star hotels or on cruise ships are outdated. People prefer going on hiking tours, climbing mountains or rafting down a river. More people want adventure holidays because they think that they are much better. “More and more people are looking for different experiences,” says a tourist agent. Many tour agencies are offering adventure tours nowadays. They say that adventure travel is the fastest growing trend in the travel industry. One of the most popular places to go on adventures is Africa. This is a great place for people who like to explore. They go gorilla tracking, visit Ethiopia or climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Some travellers do volunteering work. They dig water wells, clean the beaches by the ocean or build houses in poor villages. Most of the trips are for a week or two. People pay for all their expenses including flight, accommodation and also their meals. Some people even bring more money to donate. There were many reports on people who got injured or caught a serious disease during these vacations. They say that being able to help is worth the effort. People who seek for adventure do different activities. Some travel to Australia to try bungee jumping over one of the highest bridges. Some travel to Indonesia, Bali to take a ropes course. In the ropes course, travellers walk across ropes, which are stretched high over a valley. More travellers sail to Norway to watch killer whales swimming in the sea. Who prefers these kinds of holidays? Over half of today’s adventure travellers are women. They are mostly people in their 40s who has done traditional tours before. Most of them have already seen the Eiffel Tower or visited the Coliseum in Rome. They want more interesting experiences.
