AN UNUSUAL CHANGE
Nicky Evans is a car mechanic in London. She used to be a librarian. We asked her why she decided to work with cars. “My first reason was being free” she said. “I also wanted to use my hands and I like learning how things work. I also see that many people prefer to have a woman mechanic to fix their cars.” It wasn’t easy to become a car mechanic. She went to a Skills Centre. It’s a special school. People can learn a new job there. She studied for twenty weeks. She tells us about it: “For ten weeks, I was the only woman in the class. It was very difficult to be the only woman among four hundred men. The school hours were from eight in the morning to five in the evening. I had only thirty minutes break for lunch.” Now, Nicky works freelance. It means she doesn’t have a boss. She can choose her working hours. She works for herself.
