Animals that went extinct in the 20th century

About 99.9 per cent of all animal species that lived on Earth are extinct now. Here are two species that became extinct in the 20th century.

The passenger pigeon

This species of birds lived in North America made up about 40 per cent of all the birds in North America. The passenger pigeon was very beautiful and really fast. It also made a lot of noise when it flew. Around the 1850s, people started cutting down trees and killing passenger pigeons for food. It was easy to kill while they were flying in very big groups. Soon people couldn’t find this bird anywhere. In 1 September 1914 the last passenger pigeon died at the Cincinnati Zoo.

The thylacine

The thylacine was also known as the Tasmanian tiger. It lived in Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. Thylacines went out at night. They were carnivorous animals and hunted other animals like kangaroos and wombats. Most Thylacines were the size of a large dog. Nobody knows exactly when they became extinct, but scientists say the last thylacines died in the early 20th century.
