Are we becoming shopaholics?

A TV programme interviewed shoppers in the centre of London. They asked young people, “Are we becoming shopaholics?”
Graham – I am not a shopaholic. I only go shopping when I have to buy something. I really don’t understand how people can go shopping every day. It seems like people do shopping every day, any time these days. There is a 24-hour supermarket near my house. I feel sorry for people who work there all night.
Jennifer – I love shopping and I can say that it is one of my favourite hobbies. I think it is great that shops are open all weekend. I used to get bored on Sundays in the past because all the shops were closed. Now I can meet my friends and look around the shops. I always find something to buy. I think you can call me a shopaholic.
Ryan – I’m not a shopaholic. I hate the way all the shops in every town centre are the same. It is impossible for small businesses to survive. I used to like going to the butcher’s or the greengrocer’s to do my shopping but now the only place I can go to do my grocery shopping is the supermarket. I prefer buying things over the Internet. It’s easier and it means I don’t have to go to the town centre.
Keir – I really like shopping and most Saturdays and Sundays I go shopping with my wife. There’s a new shopping centre near where I live and you can get anything from there. We have twins so it is very difficult for us to go shopping in winter. We like the shopping centre because we don’t have to worry about the weather. We can do our shopping even if it is freezing cold or snowy outside. We like spending our money on things we like. What’s the point of working if you can’t go out and spend your money at the weekend?
Emily – I live in a small town and it has really changed in the last few years. Now there are many big supermarkets and department stores in town. Lots of small shops have closed because fewer people prefer shopping from them. It is also very difficult to park in the town centre. I don’t like going to just one store and spend a few hours there even though I buy differ ent kinds of products. I liked those good old days when we could go to shops and have a chance to talk to their owners.
Kenneth – I work at a clothes shop in the town centre and people go crazy buying so much stuff. Sometimes they don’t even look at the products’ price. I think credit cards are the main reason for that. People are spending money that they don’t actually have. Now I have to work on Saturdays and Sundays too. They let me have a day off in the week but I don’t like it because all my friends work during the week and I can’t meet them.
Gregory – I think shopping is so much easier on the Internet. I do nearly all my shopping online. I order food from the supermarket and they deliver it the next day to my front door. It saves me a lot of time. I hate the crowds and queues in stores during the weekends and I don’t have any time to do shopping during the week. I sit at home, have a cup of coffee and buy anything I need online.
