ARE WE BECOMING “THE JETSONS”
Although it lasted only for a few seasons, The Jetsons was one of the most famous TV series which took place in the future. Most of the technologies shown in the cartoon have become part of our lives earlier than expected. We might not have flying cars, but we have advanced considerably in terms of technology since the programme made its final. There were many ideas in The Jetsons that sounded utopic then, but became real later on. Video calling is one of the most easily recognizable technologies from The Jetsons because it’s already here. Most of the people today download and use different kinds of applications to make video calls. We usually use Facetime and Skype to keep in touch with our family and friends or for distant work meetings. The Jetsons may even have underestimated the potential of this technology. It is highly possible that we are going to have 3D calls, which was part of Jetsons’ daily life routine, sooner than expected. We may have smart homes with 3D phones to be able to control and enable maintenance and security. On the other hand, Jetsons used to have a robot assistant called Rosie who was walking, talking and doing most of the house chores. We can’t buy a Rosie in 2018 yet, but we already have voice assistants like Alexa of Amazon and Google Assistant to help us accomplish tasks via smartphones. You can simply ask Google Assistant to get an appointment from your hair dresser or turn the lights on in your house. We may not yet be The Jetsons, but we are definitely catching them soon!
