Before starting out
Our lifeline from school to work involves a wide range of challenges and opportunities, so here are some important elements that may help graduates who are about to enter the working world.

‘No road is long with good company.’ – A Turkish proverb Networking and relationship building can make the new employee feel happier and confident throughout life. Think about how you might put yourself in an environment where you can meet helpful people. The more people and networks you connect with, the more probable it is that great opportunities might come your way.

‘We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.’ – Epictetus Remember that the company officials aren’t just interviewing you. This is also your chance to evaluate them. The questions the candidate is going to ask will also show how curious and inquisitive he or she is. While it is true that a candidate should demonstrate his or her curiosity and thoughtfulness by asking questions, the candidate’s best chance to do so is to be an enthusiastic listener.
3 .................................................
‘You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.’ – Oprah Winfrey
At the earliest stages of a career, it is tempting to jump at the first thing offered, and in some cases, maybe the first offer you receive matches exactly your framework and desired path, but that isn’t often the case. Think about negotiating in areas where a job offer may not meet your expectations.
4 ...................................................
‘I am not afraid. I was born to do this.’ – Joan of Arc While we wish life was filled with those who cheer us on in our most vulnerable moments, it is not like that in the business world. We need to learn the skill of seeming confident at times, even when we might be filled with nervousness and self-doubt.
5 ......................................................
‘Failure is success in progress.’ – Albert Einstein You will no doubt have twists and turns or up and downs as you move forward through your career path. Bear in mind that it’s likely that with every setback, you could be that much closer to success.
6 ......................................................
‘I feel really grateful to the people who encouraged me and helped me develop. Nobody can succeed on their own.’ — Sheryl Sandberg
