BORIS BECKER

Boris Franz Becker is one of the most successful tennis players in the world. He was born on November 22, 1967 in Leimen, Germany. Becker’s father built a tennis club in their town where Becker learnt to play as a child. Young Boris started playing in competitions at the age of 8, and at 11, he was playing with adults. He trained under Gunther Bosch. In 1984, he got a manager, Ion Tiriac, who was also a famous coach. The same year, he won his first doubles title in Munich. At the age of 17, he became the youngest winner at Wimbledon in 1985. He became a very successful player, winning the Wimbledon title again in 1986. Becker also helped West Germany to win its first Davis Cup in 1988. In 1989, he won Wimbledon, the US Open and another Davis Cup. In 1991, he reached the World Number 1 ranking by winning the Australian Open. Becker defeated Jim Courier in straight sets. There, he won the 1992 Association of Tennis Professionals Tour World title. His final Grand Slam title was in 1996, where he beat Michael Chang in four sets for another Australian Open title. Throughout his career, Becker won 49 singles titles and 15 doubles titles. He is known for his rivalry with certain players, including Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg and Michael Stich. Boris Becker lives in Münich and is the owner of the tennis division of Völkl Inc. Since 2003, he has been a commentator for the BBC at Wimbledon. He is also on the advisory board of the German club Bayern Munich. Since 2014, he has been working as Novak Djokovic’s coach and has contributed to 5 of his 11 grand slam titles and 10 of his 26 Masters 1000 titles.
