Brain Surgeon
One can learn to do a basic brain operation in a few weeks, but experience is needed to do the operation without harming the brain.
I chose paediatric neurosurgery because children’s ability to recover is better and they become better quicker than adults do. Plus, it is inspiring to see their recovery.
Children are usually curious and they ask a lot of questions about the operation and health issues. I answer them patiently and respect their curiosity. They deserve it. It took me many years to be comfortable with their ongoing questions. Some of their questions sadden me, some make me laugh. Female teenagers usually ask about how their hair will be after the operation.
My job doesn’t affect me in a bad way. I try to deal with the tumours and do my best to save people’s lives and to make them better.
I usually sleep three hours. I used to work 120 hours a week now I work less. An operation takes approximately 10-15 hours. I see 30-40 patients a day.
My job is really hard but rewarding! I can’t think of myself doing another job.
