BROADWAY
Broadway is the home to many top-notch plays, musicals, and many other performances. Let’s have a look at the most popular ones of recent years.
A. After the Fall
Peter Krause makes his first Broadway appearance, along with Carla Gugino, in Arthur Miller’s 1964 play. It’s about a lawyer and various women who he meets in his life. This play is similar to Arthur Miller’s own life because one of the characters resembles his previous wife, Marilyn Monroe.
B. Aida
This is a love story involving a slave, a princess, and a soldier they both love, which is put to music by Elton John and Tim Rice. It’s directed by Robert Falls, a director of important standing, who is perhaps better known for his staging of American classics such as “Long Day’s Journey into Night”. Despite that, he manages to direct this exciting musical.
C. Assassins
This show by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman about criminals, is probably the most moving performance on Broadway at the moment. It has brilliant music which combines African-American spiritual music and 70s pop, and is based on an extremely clever book which examines the dark side of the American Dream. Joe Mantello has put together a wonderful production presenting a number of historical periods.
D. Chicago
It was originally produced in 1975. This John Kander – Fred Ebb – Bob Fosse show tells the dark story of a chorus girl, Roxie Hart, who murders her lover, avoids prison, and with the help of a dishonest lawyer, becomes a big musical star. Christopher Sieber plays the dishonest lawyer, Flynn, while Paige Davis, well-known for introducing the homedecorating show “Trading Spaces” on TV, plays Roxie.
E. Frozen
This is a powerful play by Bryony Lavery. It’s about a young child’s kidnapping and the emotions that follow. Swoosie Kurtz plays the mother of the missing child and Brian F. O’Byrne plays the kidnapper. Laila Robins plays an American psychologist who is trying to find out why someone would commit such a terrible crime.
