The Cannes Film Festival is a world famous international event which is held in the south of France every year. The festival is the world’s biggest and best known film festival. This year’s Cannes film festival took place between Wednesday 11 May 2016 and Sunday 22 May 2016. The festival hands out annual awards for excellence in films and is considered to be the world’s most important showcase for independent films and world cinema. 2016 marked the festival’s sixty-ninth year.

Last year, American film makers Joel and Ethan Coen took the chair as presidents of the international jury. They were responsible for deciding which films should win awards. This year’s president of jury is George Miller. He is an Australian director, writer and producer. George Miller most recently directed, wrote and produced the action adventure "Mad Max: Fury Road." He is also the producer of the famous animated film, "Happy Feet."

The top prize awarded at the festival is the most wanted Palme D’or (Golden Palm) award for Best Film. Other prestigious awards include Grand Prize of the Festival, The Jury Prize, Best Short Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Actor. As well as the main competition, the Cannes Film Festival hosts special screening events to showcase films and documentaries which are not accepted into the competition. The festival has a truly international flavour and features a cross-selection of films ranging from small independent productions to big-budget films starring famous actors.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the world’s oldest and most important film festivals and it is regarded by many people in the film industry as the most important event on the film festival circuit. Red carpet glamour, high profile films and famous Hollywood actors all go hand in hand in this glittering event. It is certain that you’ll see a cast of well-known celebrities, movie stars and top notch film directors from all around the world in this festival. The opening ceremony formally announces that there will be a spectacular twelve days of parties and each year the event, without a doubt, attracts the attention of all magazine writers and TV magazine programmes.
