Carlsbad Caverns
The Carlsbad Caverns, also called the ‘Bat Caves’, are among the largest natural caves in the world. A teenager called Jim White accidentally discovered the Carlsbad Caverns in 1898 in New Mexico, USA when he saw thousands of bats flying out of the entrance!
Every night in summer, about 250,000 bats fly out the entrance of the cave and spread out across the desert to search for food. The cave has got amazing shapes and colours. It is like an underground fairyland! You can take a lift down to the Big Room, the largest of the Carlsbad Caverns. It is the size of 12 football fields and as high as a 30-storey building!
Jim White also gave names to other amazing areas in the caverns, including The Frozen Waterfalls, The Giant’s Hall and The King’s Palace, which was used in the film Journey to the Centre of the Earth.‘Carlsbad Caverns is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen’, says Patrick, who has recently been to the cave. “It is truly incredible! You should go there and see for yourself if ever you get the chance!”
