Caves

Caves are important in many areas of science. Earth scientists study how rock forms and changes in caves. Biologists visit caves, too, to learn about the unusual animals that live in them.
Caves are important for another reason. There are some paintings on the walls of some caves. People who lived in the caves thousands of years ago made them. Some of the earliest paintings, like the ones in El Castillo Cave in Spain, are forty thousand years old. They are in different colours such as red, orange, white and black. These works of art connect us with people of the past.
Interestingly, people who explore caves for fun find most of the caves, not scientists. For example, a group of boys found the cave paintings in Lascaux, France in 1940. The pictures in the cave are over seventeen thousand years old.
You can explore the caves too. They are popular tourist sites. They are easy to visit and have underground tours for the public. However, exploring some caves can be difficult. You must be careful about the cold, darkness, and danger. Dress warmly and bring special equipment, such as a helmet and a light. There are a lot of shops that sell cave equipment, so don’t worry!
