Chinese New Year’s Day

Chinese New Year’s Day

Nǐ hǎo! My name is Chen, and I’m from China. My favourite festival starts on Chinese New Year’s Day and lasts for 15 days. People open all the doors and windows of their homes at midnight to let the old year leave. On the last day of the celebrations, we have the Lantern Festival. People carry their lanterns at different parades.

My favourite part of the celebrations is the lion dance. Dancers wear a long lion’s costume and dance with it. People wear bright red clothes for luck in the new year. They give oranges and tangerines to their friends. They give and take little red envelopes that have money in them because they believe this brings luck in the new year.
