COLORADO SUMMER CAMP
When summer comes, for many kids around the world it’s time for the summer camp! In Colorado, there is a unique summer camp. It lasts for 4 weeks every August. Glendwood Ranch is a non-profit camp for boys and girls aged 10 to 16. The camp provides a safe environment and kids can interact with horses, learn compassion and build their self-confidence there.
Each child that joins the camp is responsible for looking after a horse for the week, and this is the same horse they will learn to ride. Brenda Waltman is one of the volunteers working as a camp photographer. She says “Most of the campers are a little shy around the horses when they first start. When the last day comes, they are totally different children! It is amazing to see the changes in them. I am so lucky to work in such a learning environment.”
Jack Thorne runs the ‘Therapy with Horses’ programme. Jack owns and trains all the horses that the kids care for and ride. The campers also get experience in other activities like archery, camping and crafts.
The camp runs with the donations from volunteers so it is completely free of charge. Glendwood Ranch is so much more than a summer camp. It’s a truly remarkable experience for children as well as their families.
