Computers, the Internet and Us

Every year hundreds of millions of computer units and computer parts are sold in the electronics market. Computers have become an integral part of our lives. Our modern life has become so dependent on them that a day without computers can mean millions of jobs are lost and hundreds of thousands of projects are stopped.

In the past software programs were developed by a person or a small group of programmers. However, today big teams of developers work together to create sophisticated programs that do extremely complex calculations and do things that we would not imagine twenty years ago.

When the Internet was developed, very few people thought that our lives could be changed so rapidly by it. With the emergence of online social media in the 2000s, people shared information about themselves and learnt more about society and people in general. This gave Internet companies more power and information than lots of governments.

I believe another social change is on the way. Because these tech companies have become so powerful, they can control a lot of your opinions. That is why the governments are called by people to put rules in place to guarantee free expression of opinions for everybody.
