The 80s are famous for fashion and music, but it’s the inventions that were pretty radical! Here’s a list of our top 8 inventions from the 80s. Many of these inventions inspired the gadgets we use today.

• Fujifilm invented the modern disposable camera in 1986. After that, buying a disposable camera wasn’t so expensive and they were perfect for travelling.

• After several lunar missions in the 60s and 70s, NASA spent most of the 80s on the invention of a space shuttle that could go into space and return home safely. The first Space Shuttle launch was on April 12th 1981.

• Early computers were massive, so big that they took up an entire floor of a building. In 1984, Macintosh made its first personal computer for people to use at work or at home.

• CDs revolutionized the music industry, basically killing off cassette tapes and vinyl. In the mid-80s compact discs took over the music world and now cassettes are almost a memory. In around 2010, vinyl started to make a small comeback and is becoming more popular.

• The first high-def television (HDTV) broadcast didn’t happen until the late 90s, but the invention dates back to the 70s and 80s. The Japan Broadcasting Corporation showed their technology for the first time in 1987.

• 1983 saw the release of the first camcorder. It was also the year of first mobile phone when the DynaTAC 8000x phone went on sale. Worldwide mobile phone subscriptions grew to over 7 billion by 2014.

• Christian Andres Doppler invented the Doppler radar in 1988. People still use it in aviation (flight), meteorology (the weather) and in healthcare today.
