CUEBA, BRICK HOUSES, AND TEEPEES
People live in many different types of houses around the world. Here are some that you might find interesting.
CUEBA
In Andalusia, in the south of Spain, some people live in underground houses. This kind of house is called a “cueba” or an underground house. Many people prefer cave houses because they are easier to heat in the winter and they stay cool in the summer. Some of these houses have up to eight bedrooms.
BRICK HOUSES
In Sana’a, Yemen, some people live in houses made of bricks . The bricks last many years –– maybe as long as 500 years. Most of these houses are really tall. Window frames of those houses are painted in white to make them look nicer. The modern houses in Sana’a are usually not made of bricks but they paint them so those modern houses will look like the traditional ones.
TEEPEES
Some American Indians live in teepees. A teepee is a tent, usually made of animal skins and wooden poles . The teepee is a very strong tent. It is usually cool in summer and warm and comfortable in winter. It can also stay dry during heavy rains. It is very easy for the people to disassemble and pack away when they need to change location and settle in a different area. Now some people use teepees only for special ceremonies, but people used to live in them all the time. People build their houses to fit the needs of their lives. The houses are different, but one thing is the same wherever you go. There’s no place like home!
