A) ........................... There are some films that if you watch them for the first time at the right age, they have the capacity to inspire you. Dead Poets Society is one such film. It is not a film that it is cool to admit loving. It is idealistic and hopeful. However, it has been voted the greatest school film, and it is often cited by viewers as one of the most inspirational films of all time. Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American drama film written by Tom Schulman, directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams. The story takes place at the Welton Academy. It’s a conservative, aristocratic and elite boarding school. The film tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry.
B) ........................... In1959, Todd Anderson, who is a shy teenager, begins his senior year of high school at Welton Academy. There are also many other students in the academy with different personalities, like bright and confident Neil Perry, romantic Knox Overstreet, hardworking Richard Cameron, best friends Steven Meeks and Gerard Pitts, and unkind Charlie Dalton. The students meet Professor Keating, their new English teacher, who tells them of the Dead Poets Society, and encourages them to ‘make their lives extraordinary’. The enthusiastic Mr Keating is full of energy and excitement and he changes the students’ lives forever.
C) ........................... There are many young actors starring in the film. Robert Sean Leonard as Neil Perry, Ethan Hawke as Todd Anderson and many others as well. Robin Williams plays the lead character, John Keating. All the actors have a great impact on the film.
D) ........................... The film was a box office success, and it won many awards like BAFTA’s Best Film Award, Best Foreign Film in France and Italy. Schulman also received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his work. Peter Weir received a nomination for Best Director, and the film itself was nominated for Best Picture of 1989. Robin Williams received his second Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination and it has since been widely recognized as one of the actor/comedian’s best roles.
E) ........................... The film’s line, “Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” was voted the 95th greatest movie quote of all time by the American Film Institute. After Williams’ death in 2014, fans of his work used social media to pay tribute to him with photos and videos of the film’s final “O Captain! My Captain!” scene.
