English is spoken as a first language in countries such as the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada,
New Zealand and Ireland by over 380 million people.
It’s also a second and official language throughout the world in countries like India, Pakistan,
South Africa and the Philippines.
However, English isn’t the most commonly spoken native language in the world.
It is in third place behind Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. English is used in science, business,
aviation, entertainment, technology, and diplomacy as the main language of communication.
English spread around the world due to the influence of the British Empire and the importance of the United States,
economically and culturally, after World War II.
More people study English as a foreign language in the European Union than any other.
After English, German and Spanish are the most commonly studied second languages.
