Do we have a sixth sense?
Sight
It is the most powerful sense in human beings. We get 75% of the information from the world around us with our sight.
We can see about one million colours.
A lot of animals don’t have good sight, and instead they rely on their other senses.
Hearing
Our ears can hear sounds of between 20 and 20,000 Hertz.
We can lose our hearing slowly because of age or quickly because of loud noises around us.
Most animals can hear sounds that we can’t hear. For example, dogs can hear sound frequencies of up to 45,000 Hertz.
Smell
This sense in humans is closely related to memory. We can remember past things quickly by smelling things that we smelt in the past
Every person smells things differently.
Some animals have such strong sense of smell that they can smell food from miles away.
Touch
People who can’t see or hear can use this sense to learn about their environment.
There are four kinds of touch sensations in human beings: cold, heat, contact and pain.
Some insects use their hairs on their body to tell the direction of the wind.
Taste
80% of our sense of taste is actually smell.
On average, women have a stronger sense of taste than men.
We lose about half of our sense of taste by age 20.
Some animals don’t use their tongue to taste things. For example, snakes use their tongues to smell things.
