Eight surprising household objects that can kill your furry friends
If you want to keep your dogs healthy, you should never give them chocolate, but there are more dangers in our homes that can cause our beloved pets harm. Here are some of the surprising everyday household items that can hurt our pets.
1. .................................
Gases given off by pots and pans can kill home birds like budgies and parrots. When a pan gets hot, it can give out colourless, odourless gases which are poisonous to birds. Rick Axelson, a Canadian vet, says birds are in danger because they have unique respiratory systems. This also means that birds can be harmed by people using aerosol sprays around them.
2. ..............................
Flowers like lilies may make wonderful centrepieces, but if a pet eats them, they can become very poorly. Lilies are highly toxic for cats and dogs, with the chemicals in the plant’s leaves that can kill your beloved pet.
3. ..............................
Be sure to keep the garage tidy and free of spills, as the chemicals in common fluids can cause your pets harm. Antifreeze is dangerous, as ‘it can be very attractive, especially for cats as it has a sweet taste’, according to pet care chain PDSA.
4. ..........................
The image of cats and kittens playing with balls of yarn is seen both in advertising campaigns and Internet posts, but the reality is dangerous. Yarn, wool or any other string can be deadly for our friends, as it will cause internal blockages and get tangled in their intestines.
5. ..........................
Keep your change somewhere safe. Coins are dangerous for your pets. Pets may swallow them, which can block their airways.
6. ............................
If your pet does swallow a battery, rinse their mouth gently with water and call your vet straight away.
