Electronic gadgets

Every year millions of mobile phones, tablets, computers and other electronic gadgets are thrown away in the United States. These used electronic gadgets are called e-waste. Americans produce more e-waste than any other country, about 9.4 million tons a year.

People around the world throw away about 50 million tons of electronics every year. But did you know that only 12.5 percent of e-waste is recycled? That means the rest of it is not used any more. This e-waste is taken to other countries, but it pollutes the environment and puts dangerous chemicals into people’s drinking water.

What can we do to solve this problem? Experts have some advice for us:

Do not buy electronic stuff that you do not really need. For example, electronic parts are used in some kids’ toys to make them move around and produce lights or noises. Kids don’t play with these toys after a short time. Sometimes they even break these toys.

Change your gadgets less often. If you are a fan of a brand and cannot wait for the next product, stop! Some people buy electronic gadgets only because they are new. Try to buy a new product only for its new features.

Keep your old gadgets and give them to your children. This way, you don’t have to throw away your old gadgets every time you buy new ones.
