Elephants

Elephants

Elephants are the biggest land animals in the world. They are mammals and herbivores. This means they only eat plants and don’t eat meat. Elephants are very special animals. They are highly intelligent and can show different emotions such as happiness and sadness. They can even cry. Elephants can learn many things, and in some countries they work carrying heavy objects. Elephants eat a lot – up to 300 kilograms of food per day. They live for around 60 years. They drink 30 gallons of water every day.

There are two species of elephant: Africa and Indian. African elephants are larger, and weigh 7000 kilograms or more. They have larger ears. African elephants have wrinkly grey skin. Indian elephants are smaller than African elephants. They have smaller ears and their skin is less wrinkly.

Unfortunately, the number of elephants is going down. Many are killed for their tusks. Governments are trying to protect them but it is not easy.
