ENDANGERED ANIMALS
There are some animals today that are in danger. We call them endangered animals. Here is some information about different endangered animal species like pandas, crocodiles, koalas, tigers and dolphins.
Only a few pandas still live in China. A panda walks on four legs and it can climb trees. It’s got big eyes and big black ears. It’s about 1.5 metres long and it weighs 100 kilograms. These black and white animals eat bamboo leaves and are endangered because people cut down the bamboo forests that provide their food.
The endangered caiman lives in South America and belongs to the crocodile family. Many of these animals died because people hunted them for their skins. They used the skins to make shoes and purses.
Australia’s koalas are also endangered because they eat only eucalyptus trees. People destroyed many of these trees. In the past, hunters also killed koalas for their brown fur.
Tigers come from the cat family and live in Asia. A tiger is about 1 metre tall, 2.5 metres long and it weighs 300 kilograms. The tiger is quite fast and it can jump and swim very well. It’s got very strong teeth and it kills other animals for food. This animal is in danger because people kill it for its beautiful striped fur.
Dolphins live in warm waters, for example in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. A dolphin is usually about 2.5 metres long. It uses its fins and tail to swim at 36 kilometres an hour and it can jump 3 metres out of the water. It lives in a friendly group and all the group communicate with each other. This animal is in danger in some places because of pollution in the seas.
If we don’t do something to save these animals and protect their habitats they will go extinct soon, which means they will disappear from the earth forever.
