Escape !

We were travelling through the asteroid belt when it happened. A piece of space junk no bigger than a brick slammed into the side of the ship. Most of the crew were sleeping so they didn’t have much time to get into the escape pods. I grabbed a few supplies and jumped into a pod with the Captain. We were shouting at other crew members to hurry up. Then, suddenly, the ship exploded.

‘What are we going to do now?’ I asked the Captain. He tried to look brave, but I could see that he was a little scared. He eventually said, ‘We should keep calm. I managed to send a distress signal before I got into the pod. Someone is going to come out here and look for us.’

I stared through the small pod window to see if any other pods had got away from the ship. To my surprise, it looked like most of them were there. ‘Hey Captain, it looks like there are a lot of survivors. Maybe we should send a signal to meet on that planet we passed a few hours ago. The computer showed that it should be able to support life.’ The Captain nodded and so I sent the signal to the other pods.

I was glad that I took a survival training course back on Earth. People will come to rescue us, but we must wait for at least a few weeks before they arrive. With my survival skills, I think we will be able to survive.
