eSports: The New Trend of the 21st Century
A new type of sport is extremely popular nowadays. It’s called "eSports". And many children and adults enjoy getting competitive with their computer gaming. But what exactly are they? Let’s see!
What are eSports?
"eSports" is simply the shortened name of electronic sports. Similar to traditional sports where players play against each other, eSports players play against each other but use a computer. It can take place inside living rooms between friends and family, but eSports tournaments are becoming popular and take place all over the world in real arenas with real crowds.
Where did eSports come from?
Playing computer games against other people has been around for many years but with the availability of faster
internet and cheaper computers (around the year 2000) eSports became even more popular. Now, players are extremely skilled and have many fans. Competitions have also become more organised, competitive and professional. As a result, it now has its own name - "eSports".
Why are eSports such a big deal?
Several companies realise there is a lot of money in eSports. In the UK alone, gamers spent almost £3.3 billion on computer games in 2017. eSports competitions generate lots of money and winners can go home with thousands of pounds in prize money, so there's serious cash involved.
Is it easy?
Playing computer games might seem like a cool job, but don't be fooled! Like traditional sports, eSports players have to do a lot of hard work and training. Some players can train for up to 14 hours a day to make sure they have extremely quick reflexes and reactions.
What does the future look like?
eSports are on the rise. Premier League football teams are starting to buy eSports players to represent them in competitions. And, just like football has FIFA, eSports will get an official organisation, called the World eSports Association which will be in charge of the sport. Perhaps, in 100 years eSports will be more popular than football.
