EXTREME SPORTS
These days, many young people do dangerous and exciting sports called extreme sports. People do these sports in the air, in the water and on land. Skiing is one of the most popular winter activities. Many people find it exiting to ski down the Alps. However, some people think that this isn’t exciting enough. They get bored and look for something more challenging. What they do is called extreme skiing. It is one of the most exciting extreme sports. Extreme skiers reach speeds of 240 kilometres per hour and fly the length of two football fields before they land. Another popular land sport is BMX (bicycle motocross). In skiing and BMX, people flip in the air and perform acrobatic moves.
Kitesurfing is a new kind of surfing. Some people think that it is one of the most exciting sports on the planet. The best places for this activity are ocean shores, but people can also do kitesurfing on large lakes or rivers. Kite surfers travel skilfully across the water at speeds of 55 kilometres per hour or more. If they aren’t skilful enough, they will crash. Kite surfers need lots of strength in their arms, too. They need to practise for building strength and speed. This can also help them to learn more tricks. Practising kitesurfing regularly can improve your skills and keep the sport exciting.
Hang-gliding is also one of the most popular extreme sports, although the equipment is expensive. It is an air sport like paragliding. Hang-glider pilots launch from hills and soar through the air with the help of a hang-glider, which is an aircraft without a motor. Serious accidents are not common, but sometimes people get injuries when they land. Imagine flying like a bird at a height of 6,000 metres.
Bungee jumping comes from a ritual in the South Pacific islands of Vanuatu. To test their courage, young men jump off towers with vines tied to their ankles. Kawarau Bridge, near Queenstown, New Zealand, became the world’s first commercial bungee jumping spot, in 1988. To do most jumps, you must be at least 10 years old and weigh between 35 and 245 kilograms. Just thinking about many of those activities or watching them is enough to get you excited, and that’s why there are many programs on television showing extreme sports. Unfortunately, when it comes to practice, in these sports, even the smallest mistake can have catastrophic results. So, someone who is interested in these sports should think carefully and get advice from friends, family members and experts.
