FESTIVAL TIME IN INDIA
Holi is a spring festival in India. It is also the festival of colours or the festival of love. It is an ancient Hindu religious festival.
Holi celebrations start on the night before Holi with a Holika bonfire. People gather, sing and dance. The next
morning is a free-for-all carnival of colours. Participants play, chase and colour each other with dry powder and
coloured water. Some people carry water guns and coloured water-filled balloons for their water fight. The fight
with colours takes place in the open streets, open parks, outside temples and buildings. Groups carry drums and
musical instruments, go from place to place and sing and dance. People visit family and friends and they throw
colours on each other, laugh and chit-chat, then share Holi food and drinks.
After a day of play with colours, people clean up, wash and bathe. They dress up in the evening and greet friends
and relatives by visiting them and exchanging sweets. Holi is also a festival of forgiveness and new beginnings. People think that it creates harmony in the society.
