FILM TYPES

Action Films

This major genre type includes films that have lots of physical stunts and activity, extended chase scenes, races, rescues, battles, martial arts, destructive disasters, fights, escapes, non-stop motion, and adventurous heroes. The main action usually centers around a male action hero or protagonist. Modern action films have featured strong female characters, too. They almost always have a hero(ine) struggling against life-threatening circumstances, or an evil villain. Action films have traditionally been aimed at male audiences, ages 13 to the mid-30s in both American and World- Wide markets.

Science Fiction Films

These films are usually scientific and visionary with imaginative settings, and advanced technology gadgets. Scifi films are complete with heroes, distant planets, impossible quests, fantastic places, great dark and shadowy villains, futuristic technology and unknown forces. Many others feature time travels or fantastic journeys, and are set either on Earth, in outer space, or most often in the future. Quite a few examples of science-fiction cinema owe their origins to writers Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.

Horror Films

They are designed to frighten and panic, cause dread and alarm, and to invoke our hidden fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time. They deal with our fears, our nightmares, our terror of the unknown or our fear of death. Horror films developed out of a number of sources: folktales with devil characters, witchcraft, fables, myths, ghost stories, and Gothic or Victorian novels.
