FIRST MOBILE PHONES

Although most of us feel like we couldn’t live without our mobile phones, they’ve not really been in existence for very long.

The world’s first mobile phone call was made in 1973 by Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola. He called a rival telecommunications company and told them he was speaking via a mobile phone. The phone he used weighed 1.1kg. With this mobile phone, you got 30 minutes of talk-time and it took around 10 hours to charge.

In 1983, Motorola released its first commercial mobile phone. Its name was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. The device offered 30 minutes of talk-time, six hours standby, and could store 30 phone numbers. The first mobile phones went on sale in the U.S. at almost $4,000 each.

Nokia’s first ‘handheld’ mobile phone, the Mobira Cityman 900 was launched in 1989 and it weighed just 800g – a huge improvement over 1982’s 9.8kg Mobira Senator model.

When first introduced to the market, over 250 million Nokia 1100 devices were sold. In 1990s with the new designs and portability, more average customers started using mobile phones. Well, mobile phones are the bestselling electrical gadgets in history. Right now, more people in the world have mobile phones than toilets.
