Coldest night of winter so far
Temperatures in Pershore, Worcestershire, dropped to -7.5C (18.5F) at 07:00 this morning, as the UK experienced the coldest night of winter so far. A Met Office warning for ice and fog remains in place across the West Midlands until 11:00 this morning, with a further warning for snow and ice from 13:00 today until 21:00 on Friday.
Ellie Yarrow-Sanders: Judge’s Twitter plea to missing mum
A High Court judge has used Twitter to urge a mother who vanished with her three-year-old son to return home. It is thought to be the first time a judge has used Twitter in this way. Miss Yarrow-Sanders’ family have since issued a statement saying she should only return “under certain conditions”. Mr Justice Williams’s plea was delivered in a tweet posted on the Judicial Office Twitter account using the hashtag #comehomeolly.
Lincolnshire Police apologise for patrol car’s dirty number plate
Police have apologised after a marked car was pictured with its number plate obscured by dirt. Stephen McGowan tweeted Lincolnshire Police asking if a driver could be stopped for having an unreadable number plate because of mud. When the force said they could, he responded with a picture of the patrol car parked at a Tesco in Skegness. Chief Inspector Phil Vickers apologised, saying the photo showed “we fell below the standards we set for ourselves”. The officer said there might have been “a sound reason” for the car being in that condition but it “set a poor example to the public”.
Nissan ‘U-turn’ expected on new X-Trail SUV in Sunderland
Nissan is expected to announce that it is cancelling a planned investment at its plant in Sunderland. In 2016, the carmaker said it would build the X-Trail SUV in Sunderland after receiving “assurances” from the government over Brexit. The company is expected to say investment will be now be pulled, rather than existing work being halted.
