Football vs American football

1 The sport which people call ‘football’ in most countries is known as ‘soccer’ in Canada and the USA. American football is a different sport. It has mixed association football and rugby football, which were born in the UK. 

2 American football is one of the many sports which were born in the USA. In American football, players can use their hands and feet. They carry or shoot a ball which is not completely round. The players who play on the opposite team can hit or grab the player who is carrying the ball. In football, only the goalkeeper can touch the ball with his or her hand. Football players must not hit or grab the players in the other team. In American football, you can score points in three ways: a touchdown, a safety kick or a field goal. In football, you score one point by putting the ball in the other team’s goal. 

3 The football which we know today started in the 1860s. American football is almost as old as football. The first American football match was played in 1869 between two college teams. 

4 Football is more popular around the world that American football, but in the USA, things are the opposite. In the past 10 years, more people in the USA and Canada have begun to like football, but American football is still more popular. In the USA, about 35% of the people like it, but football is popular among only about 10% of the people.
