Fossils

a) __________________________________________
The only reason why we know giant dinosaurs and other extinct animals existed is because their remains have been preserved as fossils. Usually, the body of dead animals and other living things are completely destroyed by decay. However, sometimes they become buried in ways that decay does not happen. Over time, these remains turn into fossils.

Fossils provide us with amazing details about the things that lived in the prehistoric world. Scientists who study fossils are called ‘palaeontologists’. They examine different parts of a fossil to understand the lifestyle, diet, growth and movement of a plant or an animal when it was alive.

Fossil hunters have found dinosaur fossils all over the world. These fossil sites show where dinosaurs lived during different periods that lasted millions of years. Fossils are usually found in sedimentary rock, which formed near prehistoric rivers. Canada, Germany, Egypt and Australia are some of these places which are rich in fossils.
