Friendster

Friendster

We all know about Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, but do you know what the first successful social networking site was called? It was called Friendster and launched in 2002. Friends could connect with each other, share pictures and send messages. There was no newsfeed, no video sharing and no games. You could look at your friends’ profile pages and add their friends to your social circle. Then MySpace and Facebook were launched. They studied the model of Friendster and used their knowledge to make much better social networking sites. Friendster was not able to improve because it was too popular. What does that mean? There were millions of people using Friendster, and their system was too slow to support everyone at one time. It was difficult to sign in to your account and slow to use once you were in. MySpace and Facebook offered everything that Friendster did, plus they had more modern tools available. Slowly, people stopped using Friendster. When people realised and their friends were using MySpace and Facebook, they switched, too.
