Galileo and His Telescope
Galileo Galilei was born in 1564, in a little town called Pisa, in Italy. He studied in this town. His father wanted him to be a doctor, but he didn’t want this for himself. He didn’t like any school subjects except Maths. Maths was the only subject he was good at. The court mathematician offered to tutor him privately. His father was disappointed, but he agreed.
Galileo started experimenting with different things because he needed money and he had to come up with new inventions that he could sell and make money. He succeeded in his inventions. He had also experimented with thermometers, and magnets before.
He heard that a Dutch inventor had invented a spyglass but was keeping it a secret. Galileo wanted to work on creating another one. In a day, he had invented a telescope which could magnify things ten times larger than real life.
One night, he started examining the sky with his telescope. He made his first observations. The moon was full of bumps and craters. It wasn’t smooth. With the help of improving technology, first Galileo, then many others have made observations about the sky. They have also made improvements on the telescope, an amazing device that enables us to see from a far distance.
