Gender diversity means number of male and female employees and managers in companies or institutions. It has been an issue for many years because the number of female workers and male workers in companies are not the same. A recent study has also shown that most top jobs are occupied by men. Many global companies are making an effort to improve their gender diversity but they’re still not doing enough.

More than three hundred worldwide companies took part in the survey. Companies who are in a better position in business usually have a balance between men and women are more successful. It also shows that these companies do a better job in keeping their talented workers. This also has a positive effect on their customer relations and also the business decisions that they make.

Although most companies had equal number of female and male workers, the number are not the same for managerial positions. Still most of the managers in companies are male. To solve this problem some companies introduce new laws. In countries like France, Norway, Spain, and Germany, governments require companies to have a certain number of female managers and directors. Some countries don’t have laws like this. It is seen that in many countries women hold less than a quarter of the top jobs. Only 2 percent of CEOs of companies that took part in the research were women.

There are a number of reasons why companies still prefer male workers for high positions. They think that women can’t spend a lot of time for their jobs as they also take care of their homes and children. This also explains the fact that even though men and women generally start out with similar career goals, women often progress more slowly. Most women find it unfair, because they have to make a decision between being a good worker and being a good housewife or mum.

That is why bigger and more successful companies have “family-friendly” policies for their female workers these days. These policies include flexible working hours, financial help for childcare and also having a nursery within the company building so that parents will have a safe place to leave their children while they are working.
