Great British Cuisine

Great British Cuisine

It always surprises me to hear what people think about British food. The main idea people have about British cuisine is that it is just fish and chips, English breakfasts and Sunday lunch. Perhaps 50 years ago these dishes were the most popular, but there has been a kind of food revolution in the UK in the last 10 – 15 years.

The British kitchen has been greatly influenced by Indian, Thai, Chinese, Italian, Turkish, Caribbean, Polish, Japanese, and a wide variety of other cuisines. Believe it or not, for over a decade the most popular dish in Britain was an Indian dish called Chicken Tikka Masala.

The sharp increase in the popularity of cookery programmes has also played a huge role in changing how Britons view food and cooking. During the 1990s, many people turned away from cooking and started buying ready-made meals. Thanks to the campaigning of some high-profile celebrity chefs, more and more people are returning to the kitchen and learning how to cook healthy meals for their families.

Cookery programmes have also had an effect on the types of food Brits now want to eat when they go out for a meal. Brits are no longer satisfied with fish and chips or roast dinners, and are looking for more refined, delicate and exotic flavours. Up-and-coming British chefs, with their desire to give British cuisine the reputation it deserves, are finally serving up British food that the general British public are proud of and thoroughly enjoying!
