Guinea Pig

Guinea Pig

Yesterday my sister and I went to the pet shop with our mum. We were buying food for our guinea pig, Molly.
There was a display of some new puppies. Jess ran over to the window and looked at them.
‘Awww! These puppies are so cute! Can we get one, mum?’ she asked. ‘A dog? I don’t think so,
Jess,’ mum said gently.

‘Why not?’ Jess looked angry. ‘You always say no, but never why! I think having a dog would be great!’

‘These puppies will also grow up and become very big. A dog needs a large garden to run in.
We live in an apartment.’ I said.

‘Dogs are lots of work, Jess,’ mum said. ‘Puppies are cute but they are little.
You have to wake up in the middle of the night to take them to the bathroom.’ I added,
‘And you have to walk a dog twice a day.’

‘Twice a day? I can do that. I don’t mind waking up at night. I could take the puppy out.’ Jess said.
‘Well, dogs are expensive too. They need to go to the vet for injections. Food can be expensive too.
They also need toys, time, and care. If we got a dog, you won’t get an allowance anymore.’ mum said.

Jess was quiet. Then she said, ‘Oh. Well, in that case, let’s not get a dog now. I’m happy with my guinea pig!’
