HAPPY NEW YEAR
Many people celebrate New Year on December 31st and January 1st but in some countries, New Year celebrations happen at a different time. We asked four children about New Year where they come from.
Liu (China)-The date of Chinese New Year changes. Last year it was January 28th. This year, we are going to celebrate on February 15th. Before New Year we are going to clean the whole house. We have to clean everything. We even have to change the light bulbs! On New Year we are going to light lots of fireworks. My family is going to give me red envelopes. The envelopes are going to have money in them.
Mum (Thailand) - In Thailand we call New Year 'Songkran'. We are going to have a big celebration on April 14th. People are going to throw water at each other. It is going to be so much fun! I am going to go to my hometown and see my family as well.
Dolgorsuren (Mongolia)-We call New Year 'Tsagaan Sar'. The date of Tsagaan Sar changes every year. This year we are going to celebrate on February 26th. We are going to spend time with our families and we are going to eat a lot. In the morning, men have to climb a mountain and in the afternoon we are going to watch horse races.
Emahoy (Ethiopia) - In Ethiopia we celebrate New Year on September 11th. We are going to light big fires and we are going to sing lots of songs. People are going to give yellow flowers as gifts.
