HI BELLA
Hi Bella,
Guess what! Dan and I are going to the Grand Canyon on holiday.
I’m really excited because I was reading a blog the other day called ‘The Fifty Places to go Before You Die’,
and the Grand Canyon was in the top five.
I’m really looking forward to seeing the canyon.
Many people consider it to be one of the seven wonders of the natural world.
It is 277 miles (446 kilometres) in length.
At its widest point the Grand Canyon stretches 18 miles (29 kilometres) across.
At its narrowest point it stretches 4 miles (6.4 kilometres) across. Sightseeing,
hiking and rafting are popular in the area. Dan wanted to go on a mule ride to the bottom,
but I think it’ll be very dangerous, so we’re definitely not doing that.
Anyway, I don’t know why Dan wants to go to the bottom – it’s a mile deep in places.
The Grand Canyon is around 6000 (1800 metres) feet deep. You know what he’s like.
So, we’ve decided to go on an excursion instead. It’s going to be amazing –
they’ll pick us up from our hotel and then we’ll fly over the canyon in a small plane.
After that, a helicopter will take us all the way down to the bottom for a picnic! It’s really expensive,
but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we’ll just have to be careful with money when we get back home.
We’re staying in a five-star hotel in Las Vegas. There are lots of shops there, so it’ll be perfect for me.
I’m not sure about Dan – he hates shopping.
He wants to spend as much time as possible exploring the area around Las Vegas,
so we’ll do that for a day or two. I’ve read that there are lots of great shows but the idea doesn’t appeal to me.
I think I’d prefer to spend my time outside in the fresh air.
We’re also going to go on a boat trip along the Colorado River. The one we’ve chosen takes three days,
so that’ll be a great chance to relax. Dan also wants to try white-water rafting, but it looks really dangerous to me.
He loves that sort of thing, but I don’t fancy getting wet and frightened on a piece of wood going too fast down a rocky river. I think I’ll find somewhere to sit and watch him doing it instead!
I’m looking forward to getting there, but not the journey – it takes about 15 hours, including a stop in Chicago.
Write to me soon.
Loads of love,
Vicky
