History of Social Media

Someone sent and e-mail for the first time in 1971. Only 40 years later, social media has taken the world by storm. Social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are today used by 1 in 2 people around the world. It looks like a harmless, fun and also useful activity, but some scientists are sure that this affects our mental health significantly.

As a result of a long-term research, a group of psychologists and psychiatrists from the Hudson Psychology Clinic came to the conclusion that social media websites increase anxiety among its frequent users. People tend to share photos of themselves at their best, driving their new car, having expensive holidays, looking fit, etc. How hard they worked to afford a five-day overseas holiday or that car does not show in their photos. How much they had to work out at the gym, looking and smelling awful cannot be understood by looking at people’s social media posts. Those who look at these photos may feel inadequate and may develop anxiety and depression.
