These days, there are tons of options to get the news. It is really easy to reach the latest news using the Internet even seconds after it breaks. So why should people buy old-fashioned physical newspapers anymore? Many companies that own newspapers now also have newspaper apps too. The first company to release a newspaper app was News Corporation (News Corp.). In February 2011, it began publishing a different kind of newspaper, which can be read only on the Apple iPad. The digital newspaper is called The Daily . It is sent to readers on their iPads each morning. Reporters in New York, Los Angeles, and elsewhere write the content . It has different parts such as News, Opinion, and others. Each day, The Daily contains as many as 100 pages of information. Each page is the size of an iPad screen. Content is updated during the day but not as often as a website. The Daily isn’t offered for free. News Corp. is charging 99 cents a week. Readers can also pay $40 a year. That’s less than what many publishers charge each month for home delivery newspapers. “There’s a growing population here and around the world that is educated and they’re not reading national newspapers or watching much television news,” Rupert Murdoch, the owner of News Corp. said during an event at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. “But they do use media and they want to reach information they want anytime, anywhere.” What makes The Daily different than the other newspapers? News Corp. says the paper was made just for the iPad. Readers can control videos and pictures using the iPad’s touch screen. They can not only sort through photos but also move through the pages quickly with a swipe across the screen. They can also zoom out to scroll through multiple pages at a time. On the other hand, The Daily will have competition . The New York Times has a free iPad app. USA Today has a free app which puts news on the iPad and other mobile gadgets too. It has no plans to charge readers. Ken Doctor is an expert on newspapers. He likes what he has seen of The Daily . He also likes that News Corp. takes advantage of the iPad’s touch screen. However, other digital newspapers haven’t done this yet.
