Homeschooling
Some families believe that learning at home is better than going to school. Home-schooled children can arrange their own time table and choose when they want to learn. This sounds more enjoyable to most students who go to school.
Adrian is a prodigy and he wants to start university by the age of 14. He finds school lessons easier than most children, but making friends more difficult. He can spend more time on his favourite subjects and is preparing to take some of the exams earlier. People ask if he ever takes a break. He says: “Of course. I don’t focus on or study the subjects I don’t like.”
Here’s another student, Holly. She is also home-schooled. Holly had some problems at school and her parents weren’t happy with the school she was going to. They thought that teaching her at home would be better for her. She is very happy about her parents’ decision. Her favourite subject is history and she often goes to museums to study. She says, “I couldn’t do this while I was going to school because I had to do my homework and I didn’t have much time. This is more enjoyable and interesting than school.” Her parents are happy when they see their daughter happy.
Adrian and Holly enjoy studying at home, but some people think that studying at school is more useful because it helps you get ready for adult life. It teaches you to be with people you don’t like. It also helps you to make friends and be more sociable.
Both going to school and home-schooling have advantages and disadvantages. Parents know their children better than anyone and can tell which one is suitable for their kids.
